About Gentlemen’s HQ
“Gentleman” can be a bit of a loaded word. Some people think of it in terms of social standing. Others in terms of how they treat women. Some people just treat it as a polite way to refer to someone who they don’t know anything about.
Here at Gentlemens HQ, we see it as all those things and more. We see it as a way of life, not just one or two things that you do regularly.
Let’s look at a few definitions of the word Gentleman…
From Merriam-Webster, one of the most basic definitions:
A man who treats other people in a proper and polite way
Also from Merriam-Webster, one of the more traditional and formal definitions:
A man of noble or gentle birth, a man belonging to the landed gentry
From the Urban Dictionary:
A man of calm demeanor, strong preserve, intellectual thinking, polite yet meaningful speak and a good upbringing. A fighter for the cause of right with words, not guns
Or how about from the movies, specifically this exchange from “Blast From The Past”:
Troy: He thinks I’m a gentleman and you’re a lady.
Eve: [disgusted] Well, consider the source! I don’t even know what a lady is.
Troy: I know, I mean I thought a “gentleman” was somebody that owned horses. But it turns out, his short and simple definition of a lady or a gentleman is, someone who always tries to make sure the people around him or her are as comfortable as possible.
Eve: Where do you think he got all that information?
Troy: From the oddest place – his parents. I mean, I don’t think I got that memo from mine.
I’ve always liked that last definition the best… A gentleman is someone who always tries to make sure the people around him are as comfortable as possible.
That covers how we feel about it here at Gentlemens HQ very well. We believe that being a gentleman means that you are conscious of other peoples’ feelings, you do your best to treat people with respect and dignity and you enjoy things that make you happy without it being at the expense of someone else’s happiness.
Our goal is to help you find ways to put these ideas into practice in your own life. We’ve got lots of ideas but there is no doubt that we’ll adapt as we learn more about you, our readers, and gain more self-awareness as time goes on. Hopefully you’ll be along with us on this journey.
Also, just a quick note about the name of the website, Gentlemens HQ. Yes, it is written from a male perspective. That’s because the website is written by guys – there’s no hiding that, and we’re writing for an audience we understand. But we hope that some of the things we share here are going to be just as useful for the ladies reading the site as they will for the men.
Thanks for joining us here, and we hope you have as much fun and get as much out of this ride as we think we’re going to.
